A selection guide for HDPE, PP, fiberglass and stainless steel tanks
There is no universal best tank material for fertigation. The right choice follows the actual fertilizer formulation, concentration, specific gravity, temperature, storage role, cleaning method and the materials used in the valves and gaskets. Extension guidance frames tank selection around chemical compatibility, service life, maintenance and upfront cost, and greenhouse guidance specifically places concentrated stock in heavy-wall HDPE or polypropylene containers with secondary containment.
This guide is for buyers choosing a stock, holding or bulk fertilizer tank. It separates material choice from tank geometry and from fertilizer compatibility. A tank that is chemically acceptable for a dilute solution may be unsuitable for a concentrated micronutrient blend, a warm process, a long outdoor hold, or a tank fitted with the wrong gasket. The practical output is a material decision, a supplier RFQ and an acceptance check, not a blanket approval for every product sold under the word "fertilizer".
Start with the tank role
| Tank role | Typical duty | Material question to answer first |
|---|---|---|
| Concentrated stock tank | Stores a high-strength A or B solution for an injector or dosing unit | Can the wetted material, fittings and gaskets handle the exact fertilizer concentration and temperature? Are incompatible salts separated? |
| Diluted holding or recirculation tank | Holds a prepared nutrient solution while it is mixed, dosed or fed to plants | Will the tank remain clean, covered, light-controlled and drainable, and can the mixing method keep the intake sample representative? |
| Bulk fertilizer storage | Stores a larger volume for transfer into stock or application equipment | What are the liquid density, structural load, exposure, containment and inspection requirements? |
| Mixing vessel | Receives water and fertilizer and may have an agitator or recirculation loop | Can the tank accept the mixer, shaft, bottom outlet, access opening and cleaning route without creating dead zones or leaks? |
Do not use "fertigation tank" as the only line in an RFQ. A supplier needs the fertilizer name or SDS and TDS, concentration, temperature range, specific gravity, expected hold time, cleaning chemicals, tank dimensions, fittings and the intended duty. Tank manufacturers repeatedly warn that a general material rule is not enough; the manufacturer needs the actual chemical and operating conditions.
How the main material options differ
| Material | Where it often fits | Limits that must be checked | Buyer posture |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDPE or LLDPE | Common choice for aqueous fertilizer stock and many agricultural liquids; light, corrosion-resistant and easy to source in totes and rotationally moulded tanks | Exact resin, specific-gravity rating, temperature, UV exposure, stress cracking, fittings and gasket compatibility; a chemical-resistance chart is a guide, not a guarantee | Good starting point for a typical cool, aqueous stock tank when the formulation is documented and the delivered tank is suitable |
| Cross-linked polyethylene | Higher-duty polyethylene option for some surfactant or solvent-containing products and demanding chemical storage | Crosslink grade, design basis, temperature, chemical concentration, repairability and accessories; do not infer XLPE from a generic "poly" title | Ask the manufacturer to identify the resin and provide the application basis |
| Polypropylene | Chemical-resistant mixing vessels and some warmer or more aggressive liquid duties; often available with an agitator | Specific PP grade, temperature range, brittleness in cold conditions, UV exposure, weld quality, mixer loads, gasket and valve materials | Useful when the supplier can document why PP is appropriate for the formulation and process temperature |
| Fiberglass or FRP | Larger engineered storage where resin, liner, structural design or repairability is important | Resin and veil system, liner, chemical concentration, temperature, nozzle design, inspection and repair method | Treat as an engineered tank, not a generic "fiberglass is corrosion-proof" purchase |
| Stainless steel | Applications where cleanability, low interaction with the wall and mechanical robustness matter | Alloy, chloride or acid exposure, welds, crevices, passivation, cost, and whether the fertilizer can corrode the selected grade | Do not assume stainless is universally compatible; select the grade against the actual chemistry |
The table is a screening framework, not a compatibility chart. The final material decision belongs to the chemical supplier and the tank manufacturer working from the same formulation and conditions. Resin suppliers explicitly note that a general HDPE resistance guide does not replace full compatibility testing, and the same caution applies to fittings, seals and welded or fabricated parts.
The five variables that change a material decision
| Variable | Why it changes the answer | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Exact fertilizer chemistry | "Liquid fertilizer" can mean urea, UAN, micronutrients, acids, chelates, salts or a blend; calcium, phosphate and sulfate may be compatible only after dilution and may require separate stock tanks | Current product label, SDS or TDS, composition or nutrient analysis and mixing instructions |
| Concentration and specific gravity | A tank wall and support system see more load when the liquid is denser, and concentration also changes permeation, stress and precipitation risk | Maximum concentration, specific gravity, working volume and the tank's design rating |
| Temperature | Solubility, polymer strength, seal performance and chemical attack can change with temperature; a warm greenhouse or sun-heated tote is not a cool indoor tank | Minimum and maximum liquid temperature, outdoor exposure and any hot-fill condition |
| Contact materials | The tank may be compatible while a brass fitting, valve seat, hose or gasket is not; these parts are the first places to leak or contaminate a batch | Material list for tank, liner, valve, bulkhead, hose, gasket and pump wetted parts |
| Cleaning and turnover | A smooth tank with a low-point drain can be easier to clean than a nominally compatible vessel with a dead leg or inaccessible residue | Cleanout drawing, drainability, access opening, flushing method and replacement-part availability |
A material decision that ignores the last two rows is incomplete. The tank body is only one part of the wetted path. A new tank should be evaluated as an assembly, including the intake, screen, valve, drain, hose, pump and any recirculation loop.
A practical selection route
| Stage | Question | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Define the liquid | Is this a concentrated stock, a diluted feed, a bulk fertilizer or a cleaning stream? | Write the role and recipe before comparing materials |
| 2 Separate incompatibles | Do the fertilizer instructions require A and B tanks or a separate acid tank? | Do not use one large tank to solve a chemistry problem that requires separation |
| 3 Eliminate wrong materials | Does the exact manufacturer chart reject the resin, alloy, seal or temperature? | Reject the material before discussing price or capacity |
| 4 Check structure | Can the tank support the liquid density, mixer, fittings, lifting, base and outdoor loads? | Confirm wall, support, specific-gravity and nozzle design |
| 5 Check operations | Can the operator fill, mix, sample, drain, clean, label and inspect it without unsafe workarounds? | Prefer a configuration that makes the procedure repeatable |
| 6 Verify the delivered unit | Does the quote identify the resin, grade, dimensions, valves, gaskets and drawing revision? | Hold acceptance until the delivered variant matches the approved RFQ |
For ordinary, cool, aqueous fertilizer stock, HDPE or polypropylene is often the first comparison because both are widely used in stock-tank guidance. That is a starting point, not an automatic recommendation. Move to XLPE, fiberglass or stainless when the exact chemical, temperature, size, cleaning regime or structural requirement justifies it and the supplier can document the design.
What not to infer from a product label
| Listing phrase | What it may tell you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Food-grade HDPE | The listing is presenting a food-contact or cleanliness-related claim | Fertilizer compatibility, UV life, specific gravity, valve material, concentration limit or a validated hold time |
| Chemical-resistant PP | The seller is positioning the vessel for chemical service | The exact PP grade, temperature range, weld quality, mixer load, gasket compatibility or the target fertilizer blend |
| Fiberglass anti-corrosion | The seller is describing a corrosion-resistance objective | The resin, veil, liner, concentration, temperature, nozzle design or test evidence for the actual fertilizer |
| ISO, UN or FDA in the listing | A platform or seller claim is visible on the page | The scope, certificate holder, model, revision, lot traceability or applicability to the intended fertilizer duty |
| Years on Alibaba | A continuity signal on the platform profile | Factory age, manufacturing capability, product quality, compatibility or after-sales performance |
Acceptance checks before the first fertilizer batch
| Check | Pass condition |
|---|---|
| Identity | The delivered resin, capacity, dimensions, valve, gasket, cover and drawing match the quote and purchase record |
| Compatibility | The chemical supplier or tank manufacturer has reviewed the exact fertilizer, concentration, temperature and contact materials |
| Structure | The base, support, wall and nozzles are suitable for the liquid specific gravity and any mixer or pump loads |
| Cleanability | The operator can reach the interior, drain the low point, flush the intake and remove settled solids without an unsafe workaround |
| Containment | The tank has secondary containment and a spill response appropriate to the liquid and site |
| Uniformity | The mixing or recirculation method produces a representative sample at the intake; pH and EC are recorded for the first batch |
| Records | The site records formulation, concentration, date, operator, tank ID, water source and any release or remake decision |
If any of these checks is missing, the correct status is inquiry or unverified, not approved. A tank can be physically sound and still be the wrong material for the formula, or the wrong configuration for the operator's cleaning and dosing method.
Sourcing candidates for material follow-up
These listings are sourcing candidates only. The listing fields are supplier or platform statements and are not independent approvals; chemical compatibility, delivered configuration and field performance remain open questions.
Reusable RFQ wording
Please quote a tank for [fertilizer product and concentration] at [minimum and maximum temperature] with a working volume of [volume] and specific gravity of [value]. State the resin or alloy, tank grade, wall or liner basis, compatible valve and gasket materials, UV exposure rating, maximum temperature, cleanout and drain arrangement, vent and overflow arrangement, mixer or recirculation provision, secondary-containment requirements, delivered dimensions, drawing revision, MOQ, lead time, warranty and replacement parts. Attach the current chemical-compatibility statement and identify any conditions that would change the recommendation.
Bottom line
For a normal cool aqueous fertigation stock tank, start by comparing HDPE and polypropylene against the exact formulation and the full wetted assembly. Consider XLPE, fiberglass or stainless when the chemical, temperature, size, structural load or cleanability requirement calls for a different design. Do not let "food grade", "chemical resistant", "anti-corrosion" or a supplier's years on the platform stand in for a compatibility review. The material is suitable only when the chemistry, structure, fittings, cleaning route and delivered configuration all agree.
